I’ll be making this Sunday or Monday (depending on the weather). But my sister showed me that tossing meat in flour before adding to the slow cooker helps thicken sauces. Works well. I’ll try that with this recipe for sure!

Andrea, 10 hours would be perfect.

Hi! I wanted to try this recipe for next week. How many hours do you recommend cooking? It says 8-12 hours on low, would 10 hours be good?

Do you think this would taste good with chicken instead of beef? I am trying to recreate a dish I had when I was little that was chicken/turkey and gravy over chow mein noodles.

This was fantastic. Hubby had 3 bowls! I wasn’t sure how this would turn out, but it is definitley a keeper. I added carrots and potatoes. I then added some diluted corn starch to thicken it up just a bit, then served it on egg noodles. It was delicious. Thank you ladies!

Do you brown the meat before adding?

  8. Leslie

My family and I loved this recipe. My 16 month old gobbled it up. I added a package of frozen mixed veggies so it would be a complete meal, wonderful!

Hi! I just had to post that this dish was a huge hit last night. Even my picky eater (my 5yr old son) cleared his plate. Our family of five is very busy and this is such a wonderful easy dinner to make and it turns out so yummy! Thank you.

Everyone in the family really liked this recipe! As Amanda suggested, I added 1 T of diluted cornstarch a bit before serving to thicken. We also thought it needed salt, but that is a matter of taste, to be sure. I think next time I am going to try adding chopped potatoes and carrots and making a complete stew. The sauce was really delicious!!

It tasted great! Hubby even asked if we had leftovers and he doesn’t like leftovers! I served it with potatoes tonight and will send the leftovers with rice for his lunch tomorrow. Since it’s only the two of us, I froze 2 servings for use later.

This was very good. Was not sure about the Cream of Chicken with the beef, but it was delicious. Almost stroganoff-like without the sour cream. Added mushrooms toward the end. Might have substituted with Cream of Mushroom Soup, but didn’t have any. I think the soups are pretty interchangeable, but the Cream of Chicken might be a little richer in taste.

Very tasty!! I am new to the Crockin Girls and I think I’m going to enjoy the recipes. This was my 1st recipe I tried and was very good. I’m not good at making gravy so this was also a very good gravy. My husband seem to enjoy it to.

Made this tonight for supper. My whole family loved it! I added 1 T of diluted cornstarch and a package of frozen peas during the last 10 minutes or so of cooking. Served over mashed potatoes. So tasty! Thx for the recipe!!

This was great! I used cream of chicken and mushroom soup instead of just the chicken to give it a little extra. Also, a half our before I was ready to serve, I left the lid off, added some sour cream and a little guar gum to thicken the sauce. Absolutely delicious!

Very tasty! We dispise onions, but added the soup mix anyway. It added great flavor, without all the bite of an uncooked onion. It was VERY watery, but I just mixed in some cornstarch. How do you make a slurry of cornstarch. I added it by the tablespoon full & there were little chunks in my dinner. Otherwise, Great recipe!

No worries, Amanda. You can put the frozen meal in the cooker without the bag. This will extend the cook time by about 2 hours. If you let it thaw first, cook as directed. Hope this helps.

I am new to crocking, and I am also new to freezer meals. I am sorry for sounding dumb, but I have a question. If we freeze the meals, would we put the entire frozen bag (bag and all) in the crock to cook – or – would we thaw overnight and dump the contents into the crock? Thanks for any help you can give me. And THANK YOU for the recipes. You guys are awesome!

This is the second recipe I’ve tried from the book. It was simple yet had an excellent flavor! I also made this with egg noodles which went well together. Putting this on the top of my list of recipes that I will make again. :)

Connie, if you serve this over egg noodles then you’ll want to cook them on the stove top. We like to make rice, noodles, pasta, etc. at the beginning of the week and use them over the next several days!

When you added the egg noodles, were they cooked?

  33. I made this tonight for dinner and it was a hit!!!! I served mine with egg noodles and put them in with the meat and gravy for the last 30 minutes and it turned out great and it also helped thicken up the gravy perfectly. I will definately make this one again.

Sorry to hear that, Patti :/ If it looks like your recipe is thinner than you would prefer you can always take the lid of your slow cooker and crock for at least 30 more minutes, or you can make a slurry of cornstarch and add that to your crock.

  35. Patti L.

just so, so….very watery… seemed like it was missing something :-(

Just made the three meals and they are in my freezer, tomorow one goes in the crock pot as i go to work. As a newly married lady I love my crock pot especially as nurse i work crazy hours. Hubby comes home to a home cooked meal every night whether im home or not. Tonight he came home to the blueberry crisp with vanilla ice cream and my whole family came over and devoured it!!!!!!!

My husband won’t eat onions if he can see them. Instead of onion soup I use a packet of beef gravy mix and add some onion powder.

  39. Darla

Quick question. What can we substitute for the onion soup mix? My kids hate onion.
