Grandma's cookin' and childhood toys sure bring back lots of warm fuzzies! Here is a yummy Cabbage Patch Soup recipe that is a combination of both! Thanks to my Aunt Sherry for sharing this delicious "hit the spot" recipe from my Grandma Stone's kitchen!
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef, browned and drained
- 4 ribs celery, coarsely chopped
- 1 bell pepper, chopped
- 1 yellow onion, chopped
- 1 cup baby carrots, cut in 1/2
- 2 (15-ounce) cans Ranch Style Beans (with juice)
- 2 (16-ounce) cans diced tomatoes (with juice)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/2 teaspoon onion salt
- dash of cayenne pepper
- 1 to 2 cups water
- 1/2 head of cabbage, shredded
Directions
-
Step One
Place first three ingredients in a skillet and brown until it crumbles (meat doesn't have to be cooked all the way through), drain, and place in slow cooker.
-
Step Two
Add rest of the ingredients, except for cabbage and mix well.
-
Step Three
Place shredded cabbage on top leaving it as a layer on top (do not mix).
-
Step Four

-
Step Five
Two hours before of chosen cooking time is over, stir cabbage into soup. Serve with cornbread and enjoy.

Much heartier than I expected! Only substitution was using ground turkey instead of beef. I only made half the recipe and it was a crockful when using my 4.5 qt. I cooked on low for 8 hours-perfect! I did have to make this while my hubby was out of town because it does give my house that ‘sour kraut’ smell. But I thought it was delicious and it definite keeper!

Love, love, love this soup! I’ve made it four times in about two weeks time! Everyone who tries it loves it…and it’s so easy! Thanks guys!

How creative, Tamera!!!! Love it!

I made this soup last week and boy was it a big hit with my hubby. Even my youngest son and a couple of his little buddies enjoyed it and even asked for seconds. But we did trick them into eating it, we called it “Swamp Stew” and the cabbage was called, “swamp lettuce”. But when you have 12 year old boys eating a veggie that usually isn’t so appetizing you have to be creative and make it sound interesting.
I’ll definitely be making this soup again soon. Thanks for a great meal and for a great memory too.

I made this for dinner tonight and my veggie hating husband and four year old loved it! I left out the green pepper and added a packet of Lipton beefy onion soup. It was the perfect dinner for a chilly night!

This soup was incredible!! I used Bush’s Texas Rachero Style Beans and they worked great. I couldn’t find any “Ranch Style” beans on the west coast.

Rusty,
Ranch Style Beans are a Texas thing and quite delicious. They are in a black label with white and yellow writing. If you cannot find them, you can use a can of pinto beans and add a packet of chili seasoning. They keep their recipe under tight wraps so this is as close as I can get you.

Laurie,
With all the craziness with Thanksgiving, family and shopping last week’s shopping list got by us. So sorry about that…hope it didn’t mess up any of your plans.
